DESCRIPTION
Brussles tram opened in 1869 (initial horse tram) and from that date tram has been continuosly in service. Steam trams were experimented in 1876-1879, as well as accumulator trams in 1883-1890, before the complete electrification (1900). The network reached its maximum extension in 1955 (246 km).
The tram system was heavily reorganized starting from 1967, due to the contruction of some premetro sections (urban tunnels used by tram cars). The current tram network consists in 17 lines; the central north-south route (Lines 3, 4) and the outer ring route (Lines 7, 25) use tunnel sections (premetro operations).
