DESCRIPTION
Mulhouse first tram opened in 1882 (initial horse tram) and it was electrified in 1894. The original tram network was closed in 1957.
Two modern LRT/tram lines (Tram 1, Tram 2) opened in 2006.
Tram 1 initially ran from Gare Centrale (south) to Rattachement (north); it was extended from Rattachement to Chataignier in 2009. This north-south line serves the stadium, the exhibition area and the railway station (Gare Centrale).
Tram 2 runs from Coteaux (south-west) to Nouveau Bassin (east), serving the sports arena and the university; Tram 1 and Tram 2 interchange in the city centre (Porte Jeune).
A third line (Tram 3) opened on December 2010, running north-west from Gare Centrale to Lutterbach; it shares part of its track with Tram 1 (Gare Centrale-Porte Jeune Europe) and Tram 2 (Porte Jeune-Rond Point Stricker, located between Palasport and Daguerre stops); from Rond-Point Stricker to Lutterbach Tram 3 runs over an existing railway alignement (this railway segment is electrified at 750 V DC, so Tram 3 is a purely tram service).
A fourth line (Tram-Train) opened as well on December 2010, connecting Thann with Gare Centrale; Tram-Train line shares part of its track both with SFNC trains (Thann-Lutterbach; this railway segment is electrified at 25 kV AC) and both with tram-cars (Lutterbach-Gare Centrale section, electrified at 750 V DC). This kind of track-sharing operations are possible due to the adoption of a dual voltage rolling stock (running over the train section at 25 kV AC , running over tram tracks at 750 V DC).
