DESCRIPTION Marseille tram system opened in 1876; it was electrified in 1900. In years '30s the tram network achieved a remarkable extension, before being constantly reduced and substantially dismantled after the second world war, with the exception of Line 68 (Noailles-Alhambra). This trend has been reversed in 2004 when important works were launched in order to realize a modern LRT/tram network; Line 68 was definitely closed in December 2003, to be integrated in the future tram line T1.
The first phase of the new tram system opened on June 2007 (Euromediterranee Gantes-Les Caillols). It was extended from Eugene Pierre to La Blancarde on November 2007; on that date the tram track was organized in 2 lines: T1 (Noailles-Les Caillols) and T2 (Euromediterranee-Blancharde). T1 was implemented on September 2008 (Noailles-Eugene Pierre tunnel section); T2 was extended in 2010 (Euromediterranee Gantes-Euromediterranee Arenc Le Silo).
A third tram line (T3) opened on May 2015 running from Castellane to Euromediterranee Arenc Le Silo; it shares part of the track (Euromediterranee Arenc Le Silo-Belsunce Alcazar) with T2.
Metro and tram interchange at Castellane (tram: T3; metro: M1, M2), Joliette (tram: T2, T3; metro: M2), Reformes-Canebiere (tram: T2; metro: M1) and La Blancharde (tram: T1, T2; metro: M1).
