DESCRIPTION Lisbon tram opened in 1873 (initial horse tram); its electrification was completed in 1902. The ancient tram network is still working, running through the hilly suburbs (Alfama, Barrio Alto, etc) and the city centre (Baix). 5 of the lines (12,18,24,25,28) adopt the old Brill rolling stock (built from 1936 to 1940), which was renewed to preserve its original features. A fifth line (Line 15) runs along the river side utilizing a modern rolling stock (mono-directional low-floor trams).
A modern LRT line (MTS-Metro Transportes do Sul) opened on 30 April 2007 (first sections Corroios-Cova da Piedade, Cova da Piedade-Universidade); MTS was extended in 2008 (Cacilhas-Cova da Piedade).
