DESCRIPTION
Amsterdam transit network combines tram, LRT and metro lines. The first tram line opened in 1875 (horse tram) and was totally electrified in 1916. Nowadays tram network consists in 16 lines, along 3 main axis (from the railway station towards southern, western and eastern directions), plus a Circle Line passing as well through the station.
The most recent line is the so-called L26 or IJTram opened in 2005; this express tram line (LRT) connects the Central Railway Station to the new city expansion of IJburg (which consists in 7 islands close to the arbour and connected each other). Line 26 left the Central Station, prosecutes ground level for a short section, then goes underground for 2 km, before surfacing in the harbour area and reaching the westernmost islands of IJburg over EnneYs-Heerma bridge.
