DESCRIPTION The original Florence tram network opened in 1879 (initial horse tram); electrification took place in 1898. Tram service was finally closed in 1958.
A modern tram line (T1) opened on 14 February 2010, running from Scandicci Villa Costanza (west) to S.M. Novella railway station (east); it crosses river Arno through a new bridge.
Two more tram lines (both interchanging with T1 at S.M. Novella) are currently under construction: T2 (Peretola Airport-P.za della Libertà) connecting the airport to the railway station (S.M. Novella) through the city centre; T3 (Careggi-S.M. Novella) serving as well some important urban polarities (Careggi Hospital, Rifredi and S.M. Novella railway stations).
