DESCRIPTION The first Rome tram line opened in 1877 (horse tram) and from that date tram has been continuosly in service; tram was totally electrified in 1904. The whole network was took in charge by a government-controlled company (former ATAG, now ATAC) in 1929; that year it also reached its maximum extension (29 lines, 140 km). Relevant routes/lines closures occurred after the world war II, but tram service was never discontinued. Starting from years '2000s the tram system was partly renewed and reorganized; the last extension was completed in 2013. The current tram network consists in 6 lines.
