DESCRIPTION
Trieste first tram opened in 1876 (initial horse tram); electrification took place in 1900. The original urban tram network was closed in 1970, except for
an orginal suburban tram line (the so-called Tram de Opcina) which is still in service.
Tram de Opcina was opened in 1902 connecting Opicina agglomeration with Trieste city centre. Part of the track was initially operated as a rack railway due to the heavy vertcical gradient (Piazza Scorcola-Vetta Scorcola: 26%); in 1928 this initial rack railway section was converted into a a funicular.
The service has been temporally suspended on 16 August 2016, due to an accident involving 2 tram cars (frontal crash).
