DESCRIPTION
Saarbrucken tram opened in 1890 (initial steam tram); it was electrified in 1899. The original tram network closed in 1965.
An innovative tram-train system (the so-called Saarbahn) opened on October 1997 (Trierer Strasse-Romerkastell-Sarreguemines) along the north-south axis from Saarbrucken to Sarreguemines (in France). This initial section was extended in 1999 (Trierer Strasse-Cottbusser Platz), 2000 (Cottbusser Platz-Siedlerheim), 2001 (Siedlerheim-Riegelsberg Sud), 2009 (Riegelsberg Sud-Walpershofen Etzenhofen), 2011 (Walpershofen-Etzenhofen-Heusweiler Markt) and 2014 (Heusweiler Markt-Lebach Jabach).
Saarbahn route is operated by dual rolling stock (750 V DV/15 kV AC); its track is articulated in an intermediate tram section (750 V DC) from Etzenhofen (located between Riegelsberg and Heusweiler) to Brebach and two railways section (15 kV DC): Etzenhofen-Lebach (north) and Brebach-Sarreguemines (south; along DB railway tracks between Romerkastell [south of Brebach] and Sarreguemines).
