DESCRIPTION
Nottingham tram opened in 1875 (initial horse tram) and it was electrified in 1902. The original tram network was closed in 1936.
During years '90s Nottingham municipality planned to realize a modern LRT/tram system (Nottingham Express Transit/NET) in order to attenuate the road traffic congestion in the city centre and trying to contribute to a new economical development of this area (characterized by massive industrial closures and reconversions to tertiary).
The first NET section opened on March 2003 (Station Street-Hucknall/Phoenix Park); this north-south route connects the city centre to Hucknall and Bulwell suburbs, with an intermediate branch to Cinderhill and Phoenix Park. Hucknall-Wilkinson Street section runs in segregated lanes alongside the so-called "Robin Hood Railway"; Cinderhill-Phoenix Park branch runs over a a disused former railway freight line. The central section (from Wilkinson Park to Station Street) runs on street, serving the very central Old Market Square, and important commercial and leisure centers (Royal Center, Lace Market). NET was extended on August 2015, branching south (Nottingham Station-Clifton South) and south-west (Nottingham Station-Toton Lane; this stretch serves the University of Nottingham).
NET interchanges with the railways network (at Hucknall, Bulwell, Station Street) as well as with some park&ride facilities (at Hucknall, Moor Bridge, Phoenix Park, Wilkinson Street, The Forest, Clifton South and Toton Lane).
