DESCRIPTION
Newcastle light metro network (Tyne and Wear Metro) was developed partly recovering dismantled or under utilized local railway tracks. Even if this system has some underground sections through the main urbanized areas, the track is mostly ground level in segregated lanes (with level crossing protection at the crossroads). Tyne and Wear Metro is constituted by 2 lines: Green Line and Yellow Line.
The initial section of Green Line (Haymarket-South Gosforth) opened in 1980 and it was extended in 1981 (South Gosforth-Bank Foot and Haymarket-Heworth), 1984 (Heworth-Pelaw), 1991 (Bank Foot-Airport) and 2002 (Pelaw-South Hylton).
The initial section of Yellow Line opened in 1980 (Haymarket-Monkseaton-Tynemouth) and it was extended in 1981 (Haymarket-Heworth), 1982 (St. James-Manors-Tynemouth) and 1984 (Heworth-South Shields).
Green Line and Yellow Line share a common section from South Gosforth to Pelaw.
