DESCRIPTION Istanbul transit system combines tram, metro, funicular and bus lines.
The fist light metro line (M1) started its service in 1989, running from Aksaray to Kartaltepe; the so-called Hafif Metro system is totally segregated from road traffic and it was constantly extended (1989-2002) reaching Ataturk Airport in 2002; the last extensions were completed in 2013 and 2014.
Metro line M2 (full metro) opened in 2000 (Taksim-Levent), with further extensions in 2009, 2010, 2011 (reaching Galatasaray football stadium) and 2014.
Metro M3 (full metro) opened on June 2013 (Kirazli-MetroKent) and was extended in November 2013 (Ikitelli Sanayi-Olimpiyat).
Metro M4 (full metro) opened in 2012 (Kadikoy-Kartal); it's the only metro line currently operating in the eastern (Asian) side of Istanbul.
Metro M6 (light metro) opened on April 2015 (Levent-Bogazici Universitesi); it's a single-track line (with double track by-passes at the intermediate stops) operating as shuttle service (1 train for each direction).
Metro M5 opened on December 2017 (Uskudar-Yamanevler); it's a driverless metro line.
