DESCRIPTION Milan metro network currently consists in 4 lines (M1, M2, M3, M5).
The first metro line (M1) opened in 1964 (Lotto-Sesto Marelli) and it was extended in 1966, 1975, 1980, 1986, 1992 and 2005. M1 currently runs from Sesto to Pagano, where it radiates in 2 branches (Pagano-Rho Fiera, Pagano-Bisceglie). M1 interchanges with M2 (at Loreto and Cadorna), with M3 (at Duomo) and M5 (at Lotto); it's also connected to the suburbn railways network (at Cadorna and Porta Venezia stops).
The second line (M2) opened in 1969 (Caiazzo-Cascina Gobba); it was extended in 1970, 1971, 1972, 1978, 1981, 1983, 1985 and 1994. M2 has a common central section (Famagosta-Cascina Gobba) at whose ends it radiates in norh-eastern direction (Cascina Gobba-Gessate, Cascina Gobba-Cologno Nord) and southern direction (Famagosta-Assago Milanofiori Forum, Famagosta-Abbiategrasso). M2 interchanges with M1 (see above), M3 (at Milano Centrale) and M5 (at Garibaldi); M2 also serves an important park&ride area (at Famagosta stop) and it interchanges with the railways network (at Lambrate, Milano Centrale, Porta Garibaldi, Cadorna, Romolo and Porta Genova).
The third line (M3) opened in 1990 (Centrale FS-Porta Romana) just in time for Italia '90 Football Worlcup) and it was extended in 1991, 1995, 2003 and 2011. M3 interchanges with M5 (at Zara) and with the railways network (at Milano Centrale, Affori, Repubblica, Lodi TIBB).
The driverlesso metro M5 opened in 2013 (Zara-Bignami) and was extended in
2014-2015. M5 currently runs from Bignami to Milano San Siro, interchanging with the other metro lines (see above) and with the railways network (at Porta Garibaldi and Domodossola).
