DESCRIPTION Wuppertal suspended monorail (Schwebebahn) opened in 1901 (Kluse-Zoo; Zoo-Vohwinkel) and it was extended in 1903 (Kluse-Oberbarmen); Schwebebahn is the oldest monorail of this type still working. Its fully elevated track is sustained by more than 470 steel portals; Schwebebahn mostly runs above River Wupper, except for the western terminal section from Sonnborner Strasse to Vohwinkel which runs 8 meters above the urban streets.
