DESCRIPTION Volgograd (the former Stalingrad) manteins its original tram network (opened in 1913 and artculated in 3 sub-networks: northern, central, southern), which has been integrated by the so-called Skorostnoy Tramvaj, a LRT line with a relevant underground section (from north of Ploshad Lenina stop to Yelshanka southern terminal); the northern part of its track (from Traktorozavod to Stadion Monolit) is shared with some of the standard tram routes (similarly to a premetro system).
Volgograd Skorostnoy Tramvaj was planned in USSR (as well as Kryvyi Rih Metrotram, in Ukraine) during years '70s with the aim to develope an efficient rapid urban mass transport system to be applied in other middle-rank urban agglomerations (less than 1 million of inhabitants) responding better than traditional trams to the needs of rapid desplacements.
Skorostnoy Tramvaj connects the northern and the central tram sub-networks. The first section of Skorostnoy Tramvaj opened in 1984 (Traktorniy Zavod-Pionerskaya) and it was extended in 2011 (Pionerskaya-Yelshanka).
