DESCRIPTION Sofia has a typical medieval urban shape. The city centre is characterized by narrow streets; it's connected with the suburbs by some main radials, supported by ring roads. Because of the increasing of private motorization, in the last decades the streets congestion had a constant increase; this was one of the main reasons for the construction of a modern metro system, integrating the existing tram network.
Sofia metro line M1 opened in 1998 (Slivnitsa Boulevard-Konstantin Velichkov Boulevard section), with further extensions in 1998, 1999, 2000, 2003, 2009, 2012 and 2015 (to the airport and Sofia Business Park).
Line M2 opened on August 2012 (Obelya-James Bourchier, with an intermediate stop at the railway station); it was extended on July 2016 (James Bourchier-Vitosha).
