DESCRIPTION
Stuttgart tram network opened in 1868 (initial horse tram); this metric gauge network was electrified in 1905. It was continuously operated till December 2007; at that date it was completed the conversion of the tram network into a light metro standard gauge network (a long and complex procedure that has required dual gauge sections where both systems temporally operated on the same tracks).
Stuttgart metro derives from an initial premetro system; the first metro tunnel was built in 1966-1970 (Charlottenplatz - Marienplatz) and subsequently all the other city tunnels were completed (1983). These tunnels were initially used by existing tram lines, which were replaced by light metro trains in 1985 (upgrading the system to a light metro).
Stuttgart metro currently consists in 17 lines (15 regular lines + 2 special lines).
