DESCRIPTION
Barcelona Metro (currently more than 150 km long) is articulated in 11 lines: some lines are operated by Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona/TMB (L1, L2, L3, L4, L5, L9/L10, L11) and other by Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya/FGC (L6, L7, L8, L12). Among the routes operated by TMB, Line 3 (current route: Zona Universitaria-Trinitat Nova) was the first to be opened in 1924, followed by Line 1 (current route: Hospital de Bellvitge-Fondo) in 1926; Line 5 (Cornella Centre-Vall d'Hebron) opened in 1959, Line 4 (current route: Trinitat Nova-La Pau) in 1974.
Line 2, the driverless light metro Line 11, the driverless metro Line 9/10 and Line 12 are the most recent routes of Barcelona Metro.
Line 2 (opened in 1995) runs totally underground; starting from PEP Ventura it joins La Pau using a preexisting branch of Line 4, then it passes though the small district of Sant Adrià de Besòs (Verneda, Artigues) proceeding to Badalona. An extension from Pep Ventura to Barcelona Pompeu Fabra opened on 11 July 2010. Altought the project goes back to years '60s only few sections of the line were built in years '70s and it has been completed in occasion of 1992 Olympics Games.
Line 11 (opened in 2003) runs from Can Cuias to Trinitat Nova. It's a single track light rail infrastructure, with an intermediate double way by-pass; the light infrastructure choice was taken because Line 11 runs throught a low density part of the town caracterized by a complex orography. It runs completely underground with the exception of a short section close to Torre Barrò/Valbona Station; even if it's a single track line, it has been predisposed for a future double track upgrade.
The first secion (Can Peixauet-Can Zam) of a driverless line (Line 9/10) opened on 13 December 2009, followed by Can Peixauet-Bon Pastor/Gorg extension (on 18 April 2010), Bon Pastor-La Sagrera extension (on 26 June 2010) and Zona Universitaria-Aeroport T1 extension (on 12-02-2016).
As said before, the remaining metro lines are operated by Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya/FGC: Line 6 (Pl. Catalunya-Sarria) opened in 1929, Line 7 (Pl. Catalunya-Av. Tibidabo) opened in 1953, Line 8 (Pl. Espanya-Moli Nou Ciutat Cooperativa) opened in 2000 and Line 12 opened on 12-09-2016; Line 12 it's an underground shuttle service between Sarria and Reina Elisenda, sharing tracks with commuter rail lines (as well as part of Line 7 track).
