DESCRIPTION
Marseille metro network consists in 2 lines (M1, M2); it's mostly underground and it's operated by rubber tyres metro vehicles.
M1 opened in 1977 (La Rose-Saint-Charles) and it was extended in 1978 (Saint-Charles-Castellane), 1992 (Castellane-La Timone) and 2010 (La Timone-La Fourragere). M1 is almost totally underground with the exceptions of a ground level intermediate section (located between Saint Just and Malpassè) and the terminal elevated section (viaduct) approaching La Rose/Technopole.
M2 opened in 1984 (Castellane-Joliette) and it was extended in 1986 (Castellane-Ste. Marguerite) and 1987 (Joliette-Bourgainville.
Lines M1 and M2 interchange at Castellane and Gare St. Charles (railway station). M2 is almost totally underground, except for the 2 terminal viaduct sections (approaching Bougainville ans Saint Marguirete Dromels stops).
