DESCRIPTION
The first Dusseldorf tram line opened in 1876 (initial horse tram); electrification was completed in 1900. After the second world war, despite many tram routes closure, the system wasn't abandoned and continued to be operated.
Starting from years '80s, the transit system was completed upgrading part of the tram network to premetro/Stadtbahn standards (combining ground level and underground sections); the current network consists in 11 tram lines and 11 premetro lines.
