DESCRIPTION
Amsterdam transit system combines full metro, light metro and conventional tram/LRT lines.
Two of the properly said metro lines (L53 or Oostlijn Gaasperplas Branch, L54 or Oostlijn Gein Branch) opened in 1977, running on segregated tracks from the railway station to Amsterdam south-eastern areas (Gaasperplas, Gein), with a common underground section between Central Station and Amstel.
Light metro L51 (Amstelveenlijn) opened on December 1990; it shares track with L53 and L54 from Centraal Station to Spaklerweg and with Line 50 from Overamstel to Station Zuid; at Zuid it runs south to Amstelveen on a separate right-of-way (with level crossings).
The full metro Line 50 (Ringlijn) started its service in 1997, running from from Isolatorweg (north) to Gein (south-east); it runs totally ground level, sharing part of its track with L51 (from Station Zuid to Overamstel), L53 and L54 (from east of Overamstel to Duivendrecht) and L54 (from Duivendrecht to Gein).
