DESCRIPTION
The Strausberg Railway (Strausberger Eisenbahn) opened in 1893; this line was initially operated by steam vehicles, connecting the city centre (located in an upland area) with the railway station (built downline of the historical center). From the beginning the track was also used for freight traffic. In 1921 it was modified in order to serve in a better way some western agglomerations; in the same year it was also electrified. A northern extension (Lustgarten-Jugendheim) was completed in 1926; this section was closed in 1970. The freight traffic ceased in 2005 and starting from that date the former railway line was classified as a pure tram service.
